The word is, this costs about $200 from Chrysler, you can get it from Amazon
with free shipping for less than $30.

1244630432 Steering Damper

I was amazed on how it improved the feel of my steering. About 15 minutes of time to install
using two 16mm wrenches, don't forget the "blue" locktite when putting the bolts back in.

Me too...

How is it installed?
Does it replace an existing dampener?
Do you have the directions?
Care to share them?

This is to replace the existing damper after a few years of service in the car.

It tightened up the feel of my steering to what I remembered it felt like when I first bought the car.

It's easy to change, you need two 16mm, one a socket and one a open or closed end wrench.

- raise the front of the car so you can get under it (I have some stacked 2x8's in a ramp form I drive up when I change my oil)

- fully turn the steering to the left, or was that right?
you'll find out when the bolt on the driver's side can't be lifted out and clear the steering arm wink
no fear on turning the steering with the damper bolt loose

- when under the car you will see the damper just past the air shield under the car
no need to remove the air shield

- on the drivers side is a bolt/nut on the damper, remove the bolt /nut
(the steering is turned so the bolt can lift up and out and clear the steering arm)

- on the other side of the damper is a bolt only, remove it

- the damper just drops out

- put the new damper in place and replace the bolts after putting "blue" locktite on the bolts

- do NOT use the "red" locktite, you will not be able to easily remove the bolts in the future
if you do

blue locktite is also known an Permatex threadlocker blue

Craig, what mileage did you have on the Xfire when you changed the damper?

I don't think mine feels much different from when new but it is hard to remember. I have about 38,000 miles (60000Km)

I have a 2004 with about 48,000 on it.

My steering felt good too, but after I put in the new part, it felt better.

I just changed the damper last week, 7/7/09

I ordered two dampers.............your recommendation sounded soooo good that I thought if I put two on the Xfire, I would experience twice the improvement; how is that for logic.confused

Will find out in November how good these things are.

You mean there is one already on the car? I hope there is room for two more...............that should mean 'triple' the improvement; hope the steering wheel won't be toooo hard to turn?confused .... wink
